Remove Your Women, Children and Properties

With the setbacks experienced by the Revolutionary Army in New York and New Jersey in the autumn of 1776, panic was setting in all over the city of Philadelphia.  It was feared the Howe might immediately march to the city.

It was under this environment that on November 30, the Council of Safety issued a notice that “inhabitants of this city who wished to avoid the insults and oppressions of a licentious soldiery should prepare to remove their wives and children, and valuable effects, on short warning, to some place of security.”
