The Grand Duke Alexei of Russia Visits Philadelphia

In the midst of his grand tour – one orchestrated by his father, Czar Alexander II, in part to discourage Alexei’s romance with an unsuitable commoner – on the 4th of December, in 1871, visited Philadelphia.

The Grand Duke was entertained with a breakfast at the Belmont Mansion , presided by General Meade.  There was also another reception in the afternoon.  In the evening, a ball in his honor was held at the Academy of Music.
