Philadelphia Library Closed

On this day, the 19th of February, in 1880, the Philadelphia Library’s building on 5th Street was closed permanently.

Dr William Thornton, the same self-trained architect of the US Capitol Building, won the competition to design this building.  It was completed in October of 1790.
