The Philadelphia Society for the Promotion of Agriculture and Agricultural Reform

During the winter of 1784 to 1785, concerned citizens of Philadelphia seriously considered starting a society for the promotion of agriculture, patterned after the learned societies of Europe.  Samuel Powel, former mayor of the city, led the discussions and it culminated in the formation of the society on this day, March 1st, in 1785.
