Philadelphia Zoo, Inc.

Dr. William Camac wanted to build a zoological garden in Philadelphia, the first of its kind in the United States, and he received the support of his fellow distinguished citizens. Together, they gained the legislative charter to create what would become Philadelphia Zoo, and there the Zoo’s exciting history began. Today, more than one million people of all ages enjoy Philadelphia Zoo each year.

On this day, March 21st, in 1859, the Zoological Society of Philadelphia, first in United States, was incorporated.
